What is DiscoveryWorks?
| Facility |
DiscoveryWorks is located on the southwest side of Avon Lake Public
Library. The main exhibit area is 3200 square feet, with large windows
providing natural light. In addition there is a 360 square foot
Loft for Tree House Club activities, and a 900 square foot classroom/meeting
room. |
| Exhibits |
Hands-on displays focus attention on the objects, experience,
or materials, engaging all the senses. This enables the visitor
to discover why things happen by making them happen. DiscoveryWorks
is divided into two separate areas. One offers activities designed
for infants and up to age 7, while our Tweens area offers more challenging
displays for those age 8 and older. |
| Programs |
Demonstrations, classes and seminars provide opportunities for all ages individually, as a family, or as a class to explore specific topics of the arts and sciences. |
| Outreach |
Traveling exhibits and Starlab, a portable planetarium, are available
to schools and organizations. |
| Special Events |
Visiting presenters and traveling programs are scheduled as opportunities arise. |
| Support |
Developing and maintaining exhibits requires much time and effort.
Contributions to the Avon Lake Public Library Endowment Fund have
assisted DiscoveryWorks. Support also comes from the Board of Trustees,
the Friends of the Library and occasional grants. |
| Activity Bags and Kits |
30 activity bags geared toward children in K-Grade
2, and 8 backpack kits for Grade 3 and up are available to take
home. Click here for a list and description

Around the World

DiscoveryWorks spotlights various countries and cultures
in our "Around the World" display.
We exhibit items, such as, clothing, crafts, jewelry,
pictures, etc., indicative of that country or culture.
If you have a country or cultural collection you would
like to share with the community in DiscoveryWorks, please visit the
department or call 440.933.8128 x 232.
Watch Our Bugs Grow!
Stop in during regular DW hours, and check out our Praying Mantids.
They hatched in mid-April, and some of them are now located next to
the Gerbils. We also have a very unique ant farm.
